Since cities are expanding faster and the environment is deteriorating further, the issue of sustainable development becomes more significant. Transport is the key reason behind various environmental concerns that are present across the globe. The current research highlights the potential that cycling has to contribute to sustainable development within cities and be beneficial to the environment. As people discuss public transport more frequently these days, the current research aims to provide insight about the potential that cycling has to be beneficial to the environment and the economy. Increasing cycling paths within cities has the potential to ensure citizens live a healthy lifestyle with minimal pollution. Xi Yang’s model about multimodal transportation network also infers that traveling with a combination with multiple ways can get high efficiency (Xi, 2017).

One of the best things about cycling as a form of environmentally friendly transport is that it leaves few carbon footprints. In other words, cycling does not produce greenhouse gases to produce energy to move due to the composition and simplicity of the bicycle. As Ritchie (2023) claimed, cycling instead of driving can reduce the production of carbon dioxide by as much as 75% (Ritchie, 2023). In fact, cycling is more environmentally friendly since it consumes little space on the road. As opposed to cycling, cars can increase the size of cities; cars produce noise pollution and air pollution. As quoted by C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (2016), modeling projections indicate that if more people cycled everywhere in the world, then transport emissions might be reduced by 6%. As Bagherian and Mehranzamir mentioned, Integrated Energy System (IES) will be a popular way in the near future (Bagherian, 2020).

Cycling can be beneficial to the climate and environment in urban areas by decreasing traffic congestations and air pollution. When too many people reside in one area, there might come a time when there are traffic congestations, petrol wastage, and poor air quality. A bike lane provides an option to people who refuse to walk due to congested roads. This helps people to ride to their destinations faster during peak periods and maximizes road capacity. As claimed by Hamilton and Wichman (2017), the bike sharing system in Washington D.C. has resulted in the reduction of cars on the road by 4% at bike sharing sites. The air contains lower nitrogen oxides and particulates with fewer cars on the road. These two substances can make your heart and lungs sick.

Other positive impacts that bike paths can have include benefits to the economy and the government. Citizens can reduce costs incurred during transport and fuel by cycling. Many people cycling has resulted in favorable impacts on the infrastructural and health sectors in cities.

Johnson and Holzman (2025) indicate that investing in bike path construction is one of the most viable investments that the government should prioritize since it encourages people to work more, promotes good health, and provides more job opportunities. Cities with numerous bike paths experience low rates of obesity and other diseases; therefore, the economic costs of medical expenses are reduced. The economy within cities with bike path construction and green transport infrastructure development experiences job creation due to construction and design activities within the sector.

The United Nations Development Programme (2025) further affirms that ‘’the key to moving forward is to make use of all these factors—cycles, electric transport, land use planning, and digital technology.’’ Constructing bike lanes and slower zones with incentives to purchase bikes will aid us more in these targets faster. Citizens must be brought on board to ensure that policies are ideal to get them on board.

In the forthcoming years, smart cities will apply technology to ensure that living becomes more environmentally friendly. The use of GPS bike sharing has already transformed the way people move from one place to another. Using the technology, one can locate and unlock bicycles utilizing an application on one's cellular device. Docking stations are no longer required. The cities that apply these technologies to enable greater mobility and reduce the use of cars include Amsterdam, Singapore, and Hangzhou.

If city planners can use real-time data, then they can make better decisions as well. They can identify congested routes, dangerous zones, and roads that are not heavily trafficked by observing how people use the bikes. They can use this observation to reduce costs and optimize the use of the roads to ensure that cycling becomes safe and more people use bikes. For instance, Barcelona’s bike-sharing scheme, Bicing, provides the city with statistics about travel habits that are anonymous. The city can then use these statistics to determine bike lanes and optimize traffic signals to ensure that cyclists move faster through congested city centers during rush hours. As a result, cycling has increased and has also become safer.

The technology to ensure greater security has also progressed to such an extent that most people who commute to town on bicycles are wearing intelligent bicycle helmets that are capable of monitoring falls and signals among other things. Measures taken to ensure that every road user is more polite are working successfully.

Modern technology has made the rules related to bicycles more effective in the current era. If there was navigation on bikes, predictive analysis using artificial intelligence, and safety features, then bikes would be a smart and scalable solution for transport. As cities are becoming more and more modern nowadays, it is essential to integrate technology with the bicycle culture so that cycling becomes a convenient and straightforward means of transport for people. The city that has perfectly integrated cycling culture with its infrastructure is Copenhagen. The reason behind this is that the city has excellent infrastructure, technology, and planning. In the middle of the 2010s, 45% of people who worked in Copenhagen commute to work through cycling (C40 City Climate Leadership Group, 2016). The city has already invested money in bike lanes, traffic lights that allow bikes to pass through them, and bridges above bike lanes that are more than 350 kilometers long (C40 City Climate Leadership Group, 2016). When the roads are safe and accessible to everyone and are taken care of properly then people in Copenhagen will prefer cycling instead of driving. As this will result in people understanding each other more easily since there are no traffic congestions; there will be clean air in the city since there are no cars to emit pollution; and pollution will reduce to zero since there are no cars. But there are still some challenges that need to be met immediately. Some challenges include weather conditions that might be miserable; roads that are dangerous; and cycling has got adverse press coverage. But the benefits that come with cycling in the city are essential in the long run. Some new technologies that might make cycling more entertaining include electric bikes; bike-sharing with the use of GPS; and traffic apps that indicate that there is traffic on the road.

In the end, encouraging people to use bicycles is an easy and affordable means to ensure that the world stays healthy. Cycle use has numerous benefits to the environment since it reduces air pollution and greenhouse gases. In addition to that, cycling ensures that people move from one place to another with ease and affordability; that is beneficial to the economy since it provides people with jobs and reduces the costs associated with transport. Cities can be made better places to live by learning from cities that function well in cycling cities such as Copenhagen and changing policies to ensure that such cities stay that way. Using bicycles is more than just means to transport; it has become part and parcel of having the Earth in the best possible state in the future.
